We all have heard what would the world look like without bees. Those little fragile creatures are extremely important for the whole humanity. And that importance inspired some of the logo designers as well. When it comes to messages and metaphors we probably don’t have enough space to count them all here: from the symbol of hard work and dedication to agility or just being extremely organized. Or if we take another route over the shape of the insect itself that provides us with curved but also sharp edged elements to work with. But also not to forget probably the most inspirational part of a very interesting and powerful yellow and black color combination. But being inspired by the bees, as you will see here, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to directly use the exact shape of that insect or copy the exact color scheme: let your imagination flow and final result can be more then interesting. So next time when you see even the smallest insect around, don’t just squash it but take a moment to explore it fully and let it ’sting’ your senses and creativity.
This time we went down unda, all the way to Perth, Australia to talk with the well known logo designer Fabian Marchinko, better known by his alias Brandsimplicity. Let’s ask him is it really ’simple’ to ‘brand’ things when it comes to inspirational element such as this small insect that inspired me for this article.
1) Hello, Fabian! How and when did you decide to use an ‘bee inspired’ element for this brand, Onbuzz?
Currently I’m working with Brandbucket.com, redesigning some of their logos. This one caught my eye as the subject matter involved online chat, this name had that special hook that I look for…something I can bounce off and get the creative juices flowing. I tend to like a lot of Hollywood gossip chat sites and how they are sometimes very cutting or what I call “ With a sting in the tail” …see where I’m going…yep…cool! The “O” from the name in an abstract speech bubble, add a sting… to sell the message and we are home and hosed. Onbuzz is born, which is now available with the domain on brandbucket.com.
2) Can you pick out 2 or 3 more logos from this selection and tell us why do you like them?
This one by Alex is extremely clever, it works on so many levels. Using the swarming bee’s to form the “B” is outstanding, this whole concept is a brander’s dream… I’m also seeing a cool motion animation in my head for this one. What’s not to like about this next one, B by William. Cute to boot and beautifully executed by a very talented designer.
3) What do you think, why is this element so inspirational: is it the shape, color scheme, metaphor?
What I believe to be the most inspiring thing about the bee is they are tireless workers, always slogging away. Personally I feel they are a metaphor for life and how we are day in day out trying to make the honey for our families…too deep eh! Hey, they look cool!
4) Do you maybe know of some global brands that use the same inspiration for their own logo?
Beeline, mobile communication company from Russia.
5) Feel free to share here some interesting ways of using a bee in the logo design, especially if you had some other ideas for Onbuzz during the process?
At one stage I was going to explore the concept of a microphone sting, but at smaller sizes it did not reproduce well…so it got kicked to the curb.
Cheers for the interview Alen!

Wow, who would have thought there would be so many great logos based on a bee! Nice round up!
.-= Codesquid´s last blog ..Flags of the world using only XHTML and CSS =-.
Hm, Russian company mobile ISP: http://www.beeline.ru,
Code and Anton, thanks for the comments. And Anton, I have featured that logo in my other article recently so I didn’t want to repeat myself much. We are all pretty aware of the beauty of that branding system mate!
Good lookin’ article. It makes me feel good to know my fellow designers won’t bee at a loss for inspiration anytime soon. (hyuck)
Thanks, Chad! If they get inspired then let it bee!
Since no one mentioned it yet if we put this strong yellow/black scheme on a side I think that this Bee Flow solution by Bitencourt is extremely interesting. Bee’s head is instantly recognizable and then you get a bonus with a heart-like flower shape! Very nicely done, color scheme as well, very nice!
